Char Counter
About Char Counter
Count characters, words, lines and bytes in any text. Handy for checking limits on tweets, SMS, meta descriptions, database columns and form fields.
Characters are counted by Unicode code point, so an emoji counts as one character instead of two. The byte count shows the UTF-8 size, which is what most databases and APIs measure.
How to use
- Paste or type your text.
- Read the live counts. Enable excluding spaces if your limit ignores whitespace.
FAQ
Why is the byte count larger than the character count?
In UTF-8, ASCII characters take 1 byte, but Korean, Chinese and Japanese characters usually take 3 bytes, and emoji take 4 bytes.
How are words counted?
Words are sequences of characters separated by whitespace. Languages that do not use spaces between words, such as Chinese or Japanese, are better measured by characters.
Why does another tool report a different character count?
Some tools count UTF-16 code units (as JavaScript string.length does), which counts most emoji as 2. This tool counts code points.
