Hash Generator
About Hash Generator
A cryptographic hash function turns any input into a fixed-length fingerprint. The same input always produces the same hash, and even a one-character change produces a completely different one — which makes hashes useful for checksums, file integrity checks, cache keys and deduplication.
This hash generator computes MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 at the same time, for text (encoded as UTF-8) or for any file. Enter a key to compute HMACs instead. SHA hashes use the browser's Web Crypto API; nothing is uploaded.
How to use
- Type or paste text, or click
Choose File(or drop a file) to hash a file. - Optionally enter an HMAC key to get HMAC-MD5, HMAC-SHA-1, HMAC-SHA-256 and so on.
- Choose hex, uppercase HEX or Base64 output and copy the hash you need.
FAQ
Which hash algorithm should I use?
Use SHA-256 (or SHA-512) for anything security-related. MD5 and SHA-1 are broken against collision attacks and should only be used for non-security checksums or legacy compatibility.
Can I hash passwords with this?
Plain SHA-256 or MD5 is not suitable for storing passwords because it is too fast to brute-force. Use a password hashing algorithm such as Argon2, bcrypt or scrypt instead.
What is HMAC?
HMAC combines a secret key with a hash function to produce a message authentication code. It proves that a message was created by someone who knows the key, and is used for API request signing and webhook verification.
Why does my hash differ from another tool?
Usually because of invisible differences in the input: a trailing newline, Windows (\r\n) vs Unix (\n) line endings, or a different text encoding. This tool hashes the exact UTF-8 bytes of the text.
